5G NSA versus 5G SA

Why a 5G radio icon does not necessarily mean a network has the 5G Core required for full slicing.

Non-Standalone

In common NSA deployments, 5G New Radio is added to an existing 4G EPC-based network architecture. This accelerated early 5G launches and delivered more radio capacity, but it did not provide the complete cloud-native 5G Core service model.

Standalone

5G Standalone connects 5G radio access to the 5G Core. The 5G Core introduces service-based network functions, native support for 5G QoS flows and the architectural mechanisms used for network slice selection and control.

Why it matters commercially

A device showing 5G may still be using an NSA service. Full slicing propositions normally depend on SA coverage, compatible devices, subscriptions, Core configuration and operator product support.
