What mobile networks could already do before 5G slicing, and why slicing is an evolution rather than magic.

APNs and private data networks

Mobile operators have long used APNs to connect devices to particular packet data networks. Enterprise APNs can provide private addressing, controlled internet breakout, fixed IP options or links into corporate networks. In 5G, the related concept is the Data Network Name, or DNN.

QoS already existed

4G networks could classify traffic and apply different bearers, priorities and bandwidth treatment. That means network slicing did not invent differentiated service. What 5G adds is a broader, service-based framework capable of coordinating differentiation across more of the end-to-end system.

What slicing adds

Slicing can combine subscription authorisation, slice selection, Core function choice, user-plane placement, RAN policy, assurance and lifecycle management. An APN or VPN addresses only part of that chain.
