The accurate definition
A network slice is a logical network that provides particular capabilities and characteristics for a service or customer. The important word is logical. A slice can be assembled from shared radio, transport, compute and Core infrastructure while still applying its own policies, routing, service functions and assurance targets. Some components may be dedicated, but dedication is a design choice rather than the definition.
What a slice can change
An operator can vary admission policy, QoS treatment, capacity allocation, user-plane routing, Core function placement, security controls, charging rules and exposure to enterprise applications. The result is a service environment that behaves differently from ordinary best-effort mobile data even though much of the underlying equipment may be common.
Why the lane analogy fails
Motorway lanes suggest fixed physical separation and a single road. Real slicing is closer to combining traffic rules, route selection, access permissions, infrastructure allocation and destination choice across several connected domains. The analogy is useful for explaining differentiation, but poor at explaining orchestration or shared functions.
