Devices and network slicing
Capability begins in the modem but only becomes usable when hardware, firmware, subscription and operator service align.
Smartphones
Smartphones are the most mature general-purpose 5G devices, but visible slice controls are uncommon. Operators typically map subscriptions and applications to permitted services rather than asking users to enter an S-NSSAI manually.
Industrial routers
An industrial router may expose SA selection, APN or DNN configuration and modem diagnostics, yet still lack a supported mechanism for requesting or proving access to a commercial slice.
Fixed Wireless Access CPE
FWA equipment can benefit from differentiated capacity or enterprise service treatment, but a dedicated APN, traffic class or fixed-access product should not automatically be described as a 3GPP network slice.
Embedded modules
Module capability is the foundation of device support. The host must also expose the right modem controls, use certified firmware and be accepted by the serving operator.
RedCap devices
RedCap reduces device complexity through narrower bandwidth, fewer antenna branches and relaxed processing requirements, targeting devices between high-performance 5G and low-power LPWAN classes.
eRedCap devices
eRedCap continues the reduction in complexity and power for applications that need less capability than RedCap while retaining integration with the 5G system.
Connected cameras
Video surveillance is a plausible differentiated-service use case because traffic is uplink-heavy, bursty and operationally important. Radio conditions and backhaul capacity remain decisive.
Automotive gateways
Automotive slicing depends on long lifecycle support, roaming, mobility, regulatory requirements and commercial agreements across networks, not simply modem capability.
Industrial sensors
Many sensors do not need slicing. The design should first decide whether deterministic application behaviour, private coverage, local processing or ordinary managed connectivity solves the requirement more directly.
Ambient IoT devices
Ambient IoT targets passive or extremely energy-constrained devices powered by harvested energy. Its relationship with slicing is mainly through service architecture, inventory domains and network management rather than conventional broadband PDU sessions.
