5G RedCap – formally Reduced Capability, standardised in 3GPP Release 17 – is not a marketing term for a budget 5G phone. It is a purpose-built cellular standard for IoT devices that need more throughput than LTE-M or NB-IoT can deliver, but do not need the full capability or full cost of standard 5G NR.
UK networks are now deploying it. Understanding what RedCap actually offers, and where it sits in the IoT connectivity hierarchy, is becoming a practical requirement for anyone specifying cellular hardware.
The gap RedCap fills
The 3GPP cellular IoT stack has a significant gap between LTE-M (roughly 1 Mbps) and the entry point for standard 5G NR (50+ Mbps). A large proportion of real IoT deployments sit in this gap – industrial sensors, video surveillance cameras, wearables, smart meters, and fixed wireless access for premises with no fibre option.
5G RedCap (Release 17): peak download ~150 Mbps, peak upload ~50 Mbps. Sub-6GHz only, no mmWave. Battery life up to 1 year on appropriate use patterns. Module costs targeting $5-15 range at scale.
RedCap, eRedCap and Ultra RedCap
The terminology has evolved through 3GPP release cycles. Being precise matters:
- RedCap (Release 17) – the original standard. This is what most people mean when they say 5G RedCap.
- eRedCap (Release 18) – enhanced RedCap. Reduced minimum bandwidth to 5 MHz, enabling even lower-cost, lower-power devices. See eredcap.com for technical detail.
- Ultra RedCap (Release 19) – further enhancements targeting sub-$5 module pricing and multi-year battery life.
UK network deployment status
EE was first to announce commercial RedCap deployment in the UK, with coverage in major cities from mid-2025. Vodafone and Three have confirmed deployment roadmaps. A RedCap device deployed today falls back to LTE on networks that have not yet deployed Release 17 NR – the fallback behaviour is specified in the standard.
If you are specifying hardware for a deployment that will operate for 3-5 years, RedCap capability in the modem is worth specifying even if network coverage is not yet at your sites. The incremental cost at module level is small and avoids a hardware refresh.
The eSIM angle
RedCap devices designed for long deployment lifetimes and diverse geographic deployments are strong candidates for SGP.32-based eSIM. The combination of RedCap capability with SGP.32 remote SIM provisioning is likely to be the preferred architecture for industrial IoT designed to last through multiple network generations.
